Dryer vent cleaning companies make their money cleaning, repairing and installing dryer vents, so why would they promote line drying?
Dryer Vent Wizard, the nation’s largest chain of dryer vent cleaning, repair and installation companies, has their own set of values. They work hard to promote public awareness on dryer fire prevention and energy savings.
Line-drying is not as popular as it once was; however, some wise people do recognize the benefits of line-drying. Line-drying saves energy; it’s free! Line-drying uses the natural warmth of the sun and breeze to add a fresh smell to laundry rather than using chemicals and costly laundry products. Line-drying is good exercise and the sunlight is healthy. Line-drying extends the life of your clothing (where do you think lint comes from)? Lint is actually particles of your clothing. Line-drying does not produce lint.
With all the benefits, what could possibly be wrong with line-drying? Well, some people say it takes too long, or clothes dry stiff. Others are ashamed to hang their underwear out for others to see or neighbors complain about the unsightly view.
Here are some tips for making line-drying easier:
• Be careful not to set up a clothesline directly under trees to avoid bird droppings
• Use clothes hangers rather than clothes pins. Hang them on the line then transfer to the closet when dry
• Fold wet jeans with the crease down the front if this is the look you want when dry
• Dry dark clothes and bright colors in shady areas or inside to avoid fading from the sun
• Hang large sheets on outer lines and “unmentionables” in the middle if you are self-conscious about others seeing your underwear
• Remove clothes when they are still damp and tumble in the dryer or iron to remove stiffness
• Indoor drying racks are handy when the weather isn’t right for line-drying outside. Laundry may not dry as well, but you can start it here then finish in the dryer.
Even very busy people can make the clothesline work to their advantage. Hang a load of jeans outside until they’re almost dry and then finish in the dryer. Meanwhile, use the dryer for a load of socks and underwear while the jeans are still on the line. This way, you save time by tumbling the smaller items that take longer to hang out. You can save energy by line-drying heavier items like towels and jeans.
